Question #1 (1 point)

First contact with an influential person

What it comes down to is being able to talk to different types of people about all sorts of things. If you don’t seem interested or if you have nothing much to say then it can kill a conversation in a few minutes. “Ooh I must go and say hello to a friend I’ve just spotted, excuse me a moment” would be the sentence you might hear coming during some lifeless conversation. Here are the rules of making conversation: Find out about the other person’s hobby and let them talk about it. After speaking to someone who listened carefully, the reaction is positive “at last someone who is interested”. They will rate you as being patient, friendly and no doubt will be happy to talk to you again. The occasional nod or “yes absolutely” or even a chuckle or a smile can egg them on. Then keep up the conversation by adding to the same subject in a rational way, try to avoid being too off the wall; that is unless of course the conversation is a bit zany. You might meet a threshold of attention span and wish to break away from the situation so in this case have you business card at the ready in your top pocket. Spontaneously whip it out with a “nice meeting you” or then again “nice talking to you” and without further ado, off you go.

Which sentence best describes this text?

This applies to every-time you meet a possible business contact.

People in general like to meet someone who lets them speak.

Business cards can help but spending time writing down your name is better.

This will only match situations with people who are in a hurry.

Question #5 (1 point)

If looks do in fact matter, what does this rampant litter problem say about the state and its flagship city? The prevailing response might be that it reflects a careless disregard on behalf of the people who live here. But those leading the anti-litter fight note the problem runs deeper and speaks to the innate culture of Louisiana.

Research suggests litter has more to do with the place than the people, says Wesley Schultz, a psychology professor at California State University and Keep America Beautiful board member who studies litter. People are more likely to litter in dirty areas lacking trash disposals and less likely to litter in a clean space with nearby garbage cans.

“Some say people just don’t care, but that’s not what we find at all,” Schultz says. “Our estimates are about 15 percent of litter behavior is due to the person, which leaves 85 percent due to the context. Cities that are clean have made an investment in beautification and infrastructure that make disposal easy.”

What does the trickle-down effect refer to?

The way people abuse the system by never paying people.

Communism benefits everybody from the top to the bottom of the social scale.

Money does reach poorer people in spite of the fact that it is from wealth generation intended initially for making a few people wealthy.

Society is biased towards making rich people rich whilst forgetting poorer people.

Question #8 (1 point)

HOAXES

It’s no hoax, Tim Bowen’s back with another look at these handy collocations!

A hoax is a dishonest trick. As such, it can be cruel, as in ‘The promise of a free holiday turned out to be little more than a cruel hoax’, elaborate, as in ‘It appears that we have all been the victims of an elaborate hoax’, or spectacular or gigantic, as in ‘The Piltdown Man turned out to be a gigantic hoax and one that fooled a large number of eminent scientists’.

The verb that mostly collocates with hoax is to perpetrate, as in ‘The letter was later found to have been a hoax perpetrated by pupils at the school’. Likewise, the noun perpetrator can be used to describe those behind a particular hoax, as in ‘Once it was established that the alleged incident was little more than an elaborate hoax, the search began for the perpetrators’.

Hoaxes can be revealed or exposed, as in ‘The hoax was only revealed after a series of bogus emails to the local newspaper’ or ‘He once exposed a spectacular hoax solely through publishing the transcripts of a series of phone interviews’.

Various kinds of hoaxes can be perpetrated, notably hoax bombs, phone calls, emails, messages and warnings, as in ‘It can sometimes be very difficult to identify a hoax email or a fake offer’ or ‘Hoax bomb warnings have to be taken seriously and buildings are often evacuated as a precaution’. The perpetrators behind such hoaxes often use telephone calls, as in ‘The emergency services waste a lot of time and resources dealing with hoax callers’.

Choose the sentence which is true.

A hoax is just harmless fun without any pre-meditated consequence.

 Hoaxes never lead to prosecution

A hoax can be harmless fun but it can also be serious and lead to terrible things.

Hoaxes are never used to extort money from organizations

Question #15 (1 point)

GAZUMPING

Not illegal and generally misunderstood; gazumping is a common (though unpleasant) tactic in the property ‘game’ facilitated by anomalies in the British legal system. Although the term is now mistakenly applied to anyone who outbids another person on a property (‘the other buyer gazumped me’, ‘we were gazumped’), in reality gazumping occurs when a ridiculously high, BUMPED UP bid is placed on a property with the condition that the property is then TAKEN OFF the market immediately (in Britain, properties usually REMAIN ON the market until contracts have been exchanged and the purchase becomes legally binding, usually 6-8 weeks into the process), only for the offer to be drastically reduced, or BROUGHT DOWN, moments before contracts are due to be exchanged. The buyer will threaten to PULL OUT of the deal unless the price COMES DOWN dramatically. Because the seller (the person selling the house) is often dependent on the sale to fund his or her purchase and ............................................, he or she will usually (though unwillingly) accept the lower bid. As some estate agents in Britain act on behalf of (or have close ties with) ruthless property developers, this practice is still common. The estate agent is sometimes (though not always) the ‘middle man’ in this process and (because he or she is likely to receive a ‘bung’ or ‘backhander’ from the developer) can be extremely persuasive.

In the following possible answers which fits the blank space best?

 not wanting it FALL THROUGH

is unwilling to see the sale FALL THROUGH

of course wants to see it FALLING THROUGH

 hopefully it might FALL THROUGH

Job Interview

David: Hey so thank you for coming today for the interview first of all I'd like to introduce myself.

My name is David Palmer and I am the human resources manager.

I've seen your CV, I've studied it I've noticed quite a few very interesting things.

I'd like you now to tell me a little bit about yourself.

John: Yes well, I would say I'm very interested in applying to work for BFY, as I know all about your company and I've been working in IT for 19 years now. when I first joined Alcatel back in the late 90s, I was working in networks, routers and then I got into a job which took me into the field of fiber optics  but then 4G arrived.

David: Oh that's interesting do go on.

John: yes so I realize that BFY was getting a head start on for 4G because of your work with Siemens. I find it of particular interest because I speak fluent German and I sent you my CV because I think your company has everything that I need to grow and of course obviously my abilities will be of great benefit to you because I've learned a lot of different things and I've worked in a lot of different teams.

David: So you're not opposed to the idea of traveling then.

John: Well my wife Susan actually works in IT as well and both our children have grown up and are in University now. So we have a lot more time to ourselves for our careers and I actually relish the idea of traveling and meeting different people. So it would be great for me.

David: How would you position yourself in a team? Would you be more into the idea of being left a certain amount of autonomy or would you like to be in close contact with your line manager?

John: Last year I worked in Abu Dhabi and I was actually on my own for four months. I was commuting from the hotel to the site and  I was liaising in a very poor level of Arabic with two engineers.  We did have some other engineers who spoke very good English but I was referring back to my manager in Guilford on an almost hourly basis by email.  Also of course by conference call every couple of days and we did have a couple of head to head meetings.  The moment that I had a major problem and I needed to chat with him, he got on a plane to come over.  I am incredibly autonomous yet I don't like taking huge decisions on my own so therefore I do prefer to have some back up from the team.

David: OK that's fine well look I'm not gonna go through your hobbies at this stage because I think it can wait, we're going to go and have a look around the plant now so did you want to ask me anymore questions just before we set off ?

John: well I did have a couple questions the first one was for the position will it be a full-time contract mmm and how long is the trial period? And also of course the salary package I mean I saw it was advertised it's €47,000 but does that include a car and also how many weeks holiday will I be getting?

David: Let's discuss that while we walk around.

John: thank you.

Annual employer-employee meeting

1) What have you done this week?
This week, I have been working on the project you requested.

2) What progress have you made and which achievements have you accomplished?
I have compared reports and analysis of each firm, and I have made a presentation on a PowerPoint. I need to confirm my ideas with my co-workers.

3) What have you noticed this week in your working team?
I have noticed that the workload has increased, so it was a bit hard to manage the personal and work life. It is worth noting that there were a lot of us on this project.

4) Have you enjoyed working on this project and what has it brought you?
Yes I have, I enjoyed every moment and aspect of it. I have learned a lot by working with a large number of people, on a specific topic.

5) What are the difficulties you have encountered during this week? Which skills do you reckon you have to work on?
It was sometimes hard to work with so many people, and reach a joint decision. I have to work on my patience skills and be a stronger leader.

6) I would like to help you progress and develop your personal capabilities. The purpose is to strengthen your weaknesses and improve your strengths. Maybe you have suggestions on what we can change for you to feel more confortable?
It will be a good idea to divide the work in smaller groups before putting everything in common.

Con artists an article by Paul Davies with some ideas by Rodney Prosser

RIP OFFS written by Paul Davies incorporporating some ideas by Rodney Prosser

CON ARTISTS (Confidence Tricksters)

There is an old saying in Britain ‘If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.’ We have all heard stories about charming people, appearing out of nowhere, who ‘smooth talk’ people, WINNING them OVER and BUTTERING them UP (by paying them excessive compliments, using dialogue which repeats words like ‘trust’ and ‘loyalty’, using phrases such as ‘only you really understand me’ or ‘you’re like the brother/sister I never had’), enticing them to PUT increasing amounts of money INTO a get rich scheme only to disappear at the moment when the PAY OFF is anticipated. Often, confidence tricksters (or ‘con artists’) will try to SPLIT UP the mark’s existing friendships and family ties so that the mark’ (victim) can be more easily WORKED ON. Many small confidence tricks (or ‘Short Cons’) involve appealing to people’s better nature, for example the con artist asking for money or help with a ‘sob story’, while, in reality, the money is needed for other purposes. However, larger, more elaborate, cons (‘Long Cons’) usually involve appealing to people’s greed or lust. There is an old saying “You can’t con an honest man.”

There is a now famous long con involving fictitious United Nations aid money. A person claiming to represent a Third World government tells his or her mark, in the strictest confidence (hence the term ‘confidence trick’) and with excessive flattery that there he/she has access to millions of dollars of UN aid money but needs a foreign bank account in order to smuggle the money out of the country. If the ‘mark’ can help him/her by opening a bank account that he/she can access then they will split the money. He/she will also need a small amount of money in the bank account to cover expenses (usually only 2 or 3 thousand pounds) and to make the account appear legitimate. Initially, of course, all will go well and the ‘mark’ may even receive some money as PAYBACK. However, the con-artist will then explain that there is even more money to be made and the con becomes more elaborate. The ‘mark’ will then reinvest the money he/she has made back into the scheme in order to make more. As the con progresses, the ‘mark’ will be asked to put more and more money into the account as the ‘stakes’ get higher and higher.

There is an interesting flaw in human nature that dictates the more a person has already invested in a scheme, the more they will invest in order to retrieve that money. It explains the success of the gambling industry. Of course, the con artist will become less flattering and more intimidating as the con progresses. As the idea of stealing money intended for famine relief is itself highly immoral, the ‘mark’ will be unlikely to go to the police or tell anyone what is happening and will, instead, continue to ‘throw good money after bad’ in to hope of ‘striking it rich’. The internet has proved to be a golden opportunity for many confidence tricksters and online long cons are on the increase, some elaborate, some comically bad. If someone is an obvious mark, we might warn them that a confidence trickster will ‘see you coming’. We will warn them that ‘you can never be too careful’.

Role Play:

One person is the con artist, the other is the mark. The con artist has to BUTTER UP the mark by STRIKING UP a close, trusting and intimate friendship. The con artist tells him/her about the UN aid money. A ‘sob story’ could be involved. Another role player could be a friend of the mark. He/she will try to warn him/her about what is happening. Has the mark already been WORKED ON? Will the mark see this as advice or envy?

MONEY LAUNDERING

Money Laundering occurs when money from criminal activities is ‘cleaned’ so that it can be banked under the pretext of a legitimate business. Originally, crime syndicates would purchase launderettes in order to CLEAN UP money PICKED UP from illegal activities such as prostitution and drugs. As launderettes are a cash business (only real money is involved), the money banked could be PASSED OFF as genuine earnings and tax would be paid. Cleaning companies often became ‘front organisations’ for criminal gangs. As earnings from launderettes decreased, crime syndicates MUSCLED IN ON the music business. The rise of the rock music festival in the 60s and 70s was in part motivated by idealism, in part motivated by organised criminals. Large music festivals were used to launder money. Illegal money could be banked as earnings from the gate or from concessions such as burger vans. The increased use of debit/credit cards by young people over the past 20 years has made it harder to launder money in this way. As profits from ‘cash only’ businesses are now on the decline, digital crypto-currencies have now superseded traditional forms of money laundering.

Role Play:

I call this one ‘Gangsters and Hippies’ or ‘Gangsters and Punks’. A group of idealists want to set up a music festival. Some representatives of a ‘security firm’ offer to ‘help’ and offer all sorts of exciting ideas for generating income; “People want to eat, maybe they need burger vans? How about ice cream Ice Cream concessions were very popular with organised criminals in the 1960s. There was even a spate of ‘Ice Cream Wars’ in 1966.

GAZUMPING

Not illegal and generally misunderstood; gazumping is a common (though unpleasant) tactic in the property game facilitated by anomalies in the British legal system. Although the term is now mistakenly applied to anyone who outbids another person on a property (‘the other buyer gazumped me’, we were gazumped’), in reality gazumping occurs when a ridiculously high, BUMPED UP bid is placed on a property with the condition that the property is then REMOVED FROM or TAKEN OFF the market immediately (in Britain, properties usually REMAIN ON the market until contracts have been exchanged and the purchase becomes legally binding, usually 6-8 weeks into the process), only for the offer to be drastically reduced, or BROUGHT DOWN, moments before contracts are due to be exchanged. The buyer will threaten to PULL OUT of the deal unless the price COMES DOWN dramatically. Because the seller (the person selling the house) is often dependant on the sale to fund his or her purchase and is unwilling to see the sale FALL THROUGH, he or she will usually (though unwillingly) accept the lower bid.

Role Play:

One person is the estate agent, the other is the seller. If more than 2 people are involved, there can be more than 2 sellers. The estate agent has to inform the seller that the buyer has dropped his/her price. The estate agent then has to convince the seller to accept the lower offer. If there is more than one seller, perhaps the sellers can discuss whether to accept the lower offer. Perhaps the house belonged to a now deceased relative? Maybe the sellers are beneficiaries of a will? One seller needs the money urgently (perhaps to buy another house) and is prepared to accept the lower offer while the other seller is happy for the deal to FALL THROUGH and insists on PUTTING the house BACK ON the market
